I attended MNE in 2009 for one trimester. The good thing about MNE is that its super small and it's like the '13th Grade' of Erie, which means that a lot of people will know each other going there... especially ppl from bigger schools like McDowell. Therefore, it may be hard to break into the pre-formed social cliques, however, I made some of the best friends ever there because we were all from similar backgrounds, i.e. small, rural areas. However, I 'ceased enrollment' and chose to go to IUP because of the ridiculous cost. After one trimester, I had a bill of about $8 grand ( and once I realized $8,000 x 3 for one year ) than I knew I couldnt afford it. I did get close to $4,000 per trimester in grants (with a $1,000 wrestling scholarship added) but still, I would end up about $12,000 in debt per year and over $25,000 after two years... and thats just insane for a COMMUNITY COLLEGE. My main reason to give a bad review though is because MNE had ZERO intention of creating a positive campus climate. You werent aloud to have girls on your floor after midnight, and if you did, you got FINED!? I literally got fined $100 for a couple friends (were were girls) were talking with me outside my door... not even in my room. The RA's werent any help because they were getting free Room and Board which I mind you is about $1,200 each PER TRIMESTER, so $3,600 to live in super crammed old style dorms per year and $3,600 to eat in a cafeteria thats barely open and has next to nothing in it... (but the staff in the Caf was super nice dont get me wrong). You also had to call the campus police if it was past midnight because you were locked out of your own dorm. lol my friends and I literally snuck back into the dorm through window.. mind you, to a place we were paying that much per year to live!) ... I was called into the security camera room and luckily the guy was cool and didnt try and give me a hard time about it.
Any how, to sum this up, the thing that got me the most was that MNE turned my past due bill over to a Debt Collection Agency shortly after I ceased enrollment. The company was SCS Security Credit Systems Incorporated. The company seemed super untrustworthy from the get-go with a very old website to pay your bill. Long story short, they only turned over a balanced of $1,150... I ended up nearly paying that off, when I got a bill from SCS that said I owed around some $30,000 still. I almost had a heart attack! I told them it was only originally about $1,150... well, thank the good lord I kept the paperwork and kept track, I faxed them the correct amount (which was around $500...) and they admitted their mistake... yeah, a $30,000 balance compared to $500 is quite the mistake. Lastly, I also got THREE D's while at MNE,... now, was this their fault? of course not, I probably wasnt as focused as I shouldve been, but I also went on to IUP to make the Dean's List three times. I'm pretty sure that I tried hard enough in a few of my classes to at least get a passing grade of a C. However, perhaps they prefer to fail people cause thats more money in the bank for them.
I wish MNE all the best, and I hope they've made strides to stop cracking down so hard on the students. Every night of the week the police were busting a party on campus and fining the students. There was essentially nothing else for the students to do, so maybe if they provided more alternatives through clubs and entertainment on campus that would be lessened. If you're going to play a sport than just stick to it and do your best! wish I wouldve stuck it out to play a sport, but I couldnt afford the loans. I highly recommend checking IUP- its the same price as Edinboro for a quality education and decent social scene. All in all, if your family is going to pay your way through school than hey, you might enjoy it and have a great time. It's perfect for those that want a small campus and to feel comfortable, believe me, IUP was intimidating with 15,000 ppl and 2 and a half hours away, but if you're like me, and you have to pay your own way through school reconsider.
Beautiful campus, good professors
All those poor college students penned up inside when there's an assisted living facility across the street. Aptly named College View Manor, with almost NO ONE TO SHOVEL SNOW except out of town visitors! Didn't get a pic, but there was one kid jogging in shorts! Shoveling is exercise too!
